About
Alfonso Velez has lived as a bike messenger in Washington, DC. A teenager in Moscow. An obituary writer, housekeeper and vintage guitar salesman. An NYC Ballet dance studio janitor. A punk venue door guy; a 20-something in Mexico City. An advertising music creative director. An Italian car accident survivor. A barista. Francophile. West Village music residency longstay. Accidental kidnap victim. Spanish translator. Satellite radio imager. Song writer. Lyric twister. String arranger. Gypsy. New Yorker. There’s a lot to live in his writing and Velez's music is borne from experience. In New York, he’s shared bills with Jesse Malin, Jakob Dylan, Joseph Arthur, Alejandro Escovedo, and has been featured on WNYC’s Soundcheck a couple times; playing the rooms that musicians do in this champion's league city, staying under the radar, save for the occasional press nod via word of mouth. It makes perfect sense that he should title his upcoming album, Flamingoes At Eclipse and that it sounds perfectly different from the steady stream of Post-Americana songwriters currently being listened to. Velez stands apart with a canon of songs sure to convert even the most cynical audiences. Fans of Father John Misty, Paul Simon, The Band, Michael Kiwanuka and The War on Drugs will count themselves converted. Instagram"He's a stunning, rare find; I found myself slack-jawed, and remarking aloud, 'Wow, that dude, can really sing.'" - Sonic Scoop"Completely Stellar! It's a wonder how Alfonso Velez has yet to break through to the masses." - The Onion's A.V. Club“You know, people see the name Alfonso Velez on a billboard and they come in expecting a very different sort of musician, but it's high-def songwriting, way up there with Elliott Smith and Paul Simon." - John Schaffer, WNYC Soundcheck"His gift for poetry is clear and evident." - Relix Magazine
